Informational Graphics
JOMC 484: Informational Graphics with Terrence Oliver • School of Media and Journalism
This class taught me the principles of visual representation of data, design and illustration intended to convey informations. The pieces below are the main projects I submitted during the Spring 2015 semester. The project assignment determined the content and style of each informational graphic. I choose to illustrate the Tesla due to my interest in the automotive industry. I wanted to challenge myself to accomplish a difficult design because it was the first project of the class. The second project is part of a magazine that is made up of ten spreads that contain important information, statistics and data on the implication of domestic violence. During this project, the class had to collaborate with each other to create one, cohesive piece that highlighted important data on a sensitive social issue. The assignment for the final project was to create an organic piece that focused on a natural element. We were required to use both Photoshop and Illustrator for the primary graphic. I immediately wanted to illustrate a plant, but I also wanted to pick a topic that would have a lot of information for me to research. I choose medical marijuana as my topic due to its popularity in the news and the vast amount of various data available.

Illustrations
The following illustrations were created primarily in Adobe Illustrator. The tropical fish illustration was hand drawn in Illustrator using the pen tool. Once the outline was completed, I proceeded to fill in the body of the fish with varying gradients to produce a natural look. After spending time tweaking the fish, I designed the background in Adobe Photoshop using gradients and brushes. The mason jar illustration was designed entirely in Adobe Illustrator using effects such a Gaussian blur, drop shadows and emboss.

Branding & Logos
During my time as a graphic designer, I have illustrated several logos and established brands for multiple clients. The first logo below, Astrocat Design, was created for my freelance design business. My business partner and I wanted to combine both of our interests (cats and sci-fi) to create a brand that represents us. The second, Capital BST, was designed for for a store that specializes in brand-name consignment shoes and clothes in Raleigh. The owner of the store wanted me to emphasize the capital city aspect of his vision. He requested the use of a capital building element. Not only did I design the logo and brand, I created marketing collateral for the business. And finally, the third logo, WAM! Fitness, was designed for a fitness enthusiast who was starting his own personal training business. His vision included a comic book feel that was bold and vibrant.

Social Media
During my time at AroundCampus Group, I created several images to post on the company's social media platforms. The main social media channel I designed for was Instagram. I created eye-catching visuals that advertised the company's internship opportunities. I was given complete creative freedom on the project so my goal was to make images that I would enjoy seeing as a college student. Along with the internship advertisements, I created social media posts for our client GMAC. These posts were very specific to the client's needs. The GMAT example below was designed to advertise a Virtual Q&A session we assisted GMAC with during Fall 2016.
